Cystic Acne
Cystic acne is known as a much more severe form of common acne. Where common acne are painless pimples that clear up on there own within a few days, with no further treatment, cystic acne are cysts that are severely infected and that are very painful to the touch, red, tender and swollen, pus filled and very large in size. Both forms of acne occur when a hair follicle gets blocked by dirt or bacteria, causing the inflammation to a rise. Cystic acne is where an infection is trapped under the skin as compared to common acne, where the infection occurs above the skin to let out the infection.
Cystic acne is most commonly found on the face and neck area, but can sometimes spread to other parts of the body like the shoulders, back and chest. If found on other parts of the body, it’s diagnosed and treated as a different type of disease.
Cystic acne affects both men and women, but has a slightly higher occurrence rate in men than women. It most commonly affects teenagers because of the increase in hormonal levels due to puberty. As you age, cystic acne usually tends to improve. If it does not, it could be the sign of a more serious underlying medical condition.
In men, the increased natural occurrence of male hormones with puberty tends to cause the disease to start suddenly, especially if your body produces a large amount of the hormone very quickly.
In women, it could be the underlying sign of another health condition. High levels of male hormone can be a sign of an endocrine problem. One of the treatments for this type of endocrine problem is to regulate the hormones with the use of birth control pills.
Cystic acne needs to be medically treated to stop the spread and chances of scarring. Draining the cysts, cortisone shots, antibiotics and other treatments are used to lessen or even rid of the disease.
One of the concerns of cystic acne is the development of scars. In teenagers statistics show it has caused low self esteem and lack of self confidence.
